Patriotism Essay

Many people argue about what the definition of a patriot is. Some people say it means "love of country and willingness to sacrifice for it." Some people think it means to blindly follow whatever the popular political opinion might be that week. It could be raising taxes, going to war, or any other issue of the month. I believe that being a patriot means to love your country.

To be a patriot you don't have to join the army. You just have to be loyal to your country. To be loyal to your country you have to respect and follow the laws. Some of the laws to follow would be to pay your taxes, vote for representation, fight for equality for everyone. Besides respecting the laws you should also honor the right of individuals to be different.

An example of patriotism is the colonists who fought against the British. They are patriotic because almost every one of them put their life on the line for their freedom. Another example of a patriot is Abraham Lincoln. He fought for the equal rights for all by freeing the slaves. It didn’t matter what you said to Abraham Lincoln even if it tore the country apart he wasn’t going to rest until the slaves were freed. Many people didn’t like Abe Lincoln, but more people liked him. During his presidential campaign

In conclusion I believe that to be a patriot you need to be loyal to your country like Abraham Lincoln and the colonists who fought the revolutionary war. That is why I believe that being a patriot is to show love for your country.
