Flight

Flight is a short story about a poor family and my question for you is how would the family, who had recently lost their father today or back in the time of where this story took place. And why would this family of four with their mom and her nine teen year old son at the helm of the family do better or worse today than back when this story took place

I believe they would have a better chance of surviving today, because with all of the technology today they probably would have had a better chance of saving their father’s life when he was bitten in the chest by a snake. Where back then with their wealth the best they could do is stand by his side for his last minutes of life and hope for the best. This in almost all cases back then wasn’t enough.

Another thing that would make life easier today just like the better healthcare is instead of the mother in the family having to ask her nineteen year old son to make an overnight trip into town to go pick up medicine she could just get in the car or on a bus and ride to the nearest Walgreens to pick up the medicine. Pepe would have also enjoyed life more today because he is a very lazy individual according to John Steinbeck.

Although he starts out as a lazy person Pepe really develops throughout the story to become a hard working individual just like his father and so I have another question to ask where would this family lead a easier life today or back when this story had taken place.

Cooperstown New York

Cooperstown is a city in New York that is home to the baseball hall of fame and it is also home to a baseball park called Field of Dreams. The field of Dreams has 27 baseball fields. The fields in Cooperstown are just like the fields the pros play on just smaller. All of which have lights on them so you can play a game at night if you needed to. Another thing it has 108 barracks (barracks are like little one room cabins with only beds in them) he reason The Field of Dreams has barracks is because it hosts a baseball tournament every week of the summer. And the baseball teams get to sleep in the barracks and eat in the giant food tent. I believe there is a couple problems with the food tent if you ask me. The problems are the food tent are the food doesn’t taste that good, you have to wait in long lines to get your food and if you need butter instead of giving you normal butter. They give you liquid butter and by the time you get back to your seat it has solidified and looks really disgusting. The field of dreams also has about fifty batting cages and a big field that teams can practice fielding in. that is what the field of dreams is like.

Raymond's Run

Raymond’s run is a short story written by Toni Cade Bambara and it all started on a nice sunny morning where a girl called squeaky and her big troubled brother named Raymond went out for a walk. This morning Squeaky is practicing her breathing exercises breathing in and out on counts of seven. While she is doing this her brother Raymond is pretending to drive a stage coach driver. When all of a sudden these mean girls came walking by to mess with squeaky and Raymond while they were walking down Broadway. After the girls called them names and tried to intimidate them which didn’t work. It actually made squeaky more determined to beat them in the track meet that’s coming up soon. She knew that she was going to win because she faster and better than the other girls and no matter what they said they wouldn’t change her mind.

In the story like I said before the author Toni Cade Bambara is trying to tell you that you can win or do whatever it is that you want to achieve if you put your mind to it. For example let’s say that you’re a poor free throw shooter. One thing you could do is set goal. If you have trouble with free throws your goal would to make a certain amount of free throws in a game. Now that you have a goal set you have to work to achieve that goal. One way you could achieve this goal is to practice by shooting at least a hundred free throws a day and keep track of how many you make out of a that hundred or more free throws. He is also telling the readers that you shouldn’t let people tell you that you’re not good enough because you are you just have to keep working to get better. This is one thing that the great Michael Jordan knows and tries to tell others that. Just because you don’t make a select team that you tried out for it doesn’t mean that you’re not good. It just means that you have to work that much harder.

That’s what Michael Jordon told himself when he got cut from his high school basketball team. He also told himself that when he first came into the NBA and people told him that he was a bad shooter and defender. When he was told that he responded by saying, “Now that I know my weaknesses I am going to take them and work on them until they become my strengths.” And he did that until he was known as one of the league’s greatest shooters and defenders. Squeaky is very similar because she too practices her running and although she is told that she isn’t going to win the next track meet she doesn’t listen to them she just ignores them and just keeps practicing.

And just like Michael Jordon after he completes his many goals he gives back to the community by running basketball camps. Squeaky’s way of giving back was she was going to help Raymond take up the sport of running she was going to help him on his running form and his breathing. And that is why you shouldn’t listen to people that telling you that you aren’t good enough.

The Moustache

The Moustache is a short story written by Robert Cormier and it is in the tragic mode of literature. There are many signs that tell me that it is in the tragic mode of literature. One sign is it follows the tragic plotline. In this short story the Author Robert Cormier tried to express to his audience that little things like a moustache are all it takes for people to bring back memories.

It brings back memories of when you were with someone special like a husband or a dad or mom. As I said before one sign that made me think it followed the tragic mode of literature as I said before it followed the tragic plotline. It started in minor conflict. The conflict is in the beginning when his mom tries to get him to shave his moustache off because he was going to visit his grandma who is living in an assisted living center. She thought his grandma wasn’t going to recognize him because she was having a hard time recognizing people and had never seen mike with a moustache before..

She was having a hard time recognizing people because she is 73 years old and is suffering from arteriosclerosis. This is a chronic disease that is characterized by abnormal thickening and hardening of the arterial wall. The rise to power in this short story is when the main character Mike is recognized as Mike by his grandma. The tragic flaw is when he realized that his grandma didn’t actually recognize him. His grandma actually thought that he was his grandpa who was also named Mike.

Although His grandfather has already passed away his grandma forgot that and Mike’s moustache made him look like his grandpa. That is the tragic flaw because he didn’t shave off his moustache and because of that his grandma didn’t recognize him. The death symbolism is in the end of the story when he shaves off his moustache and like I said before the smallest of things can bring back memories. Even something as small as mikes moustache.
